Welcome Zachary, The New TGENA President!

Change is all around us. We are trading in our shorts and sandals for sweaters and jackets. Days are getting shorter and the evenings cooler. The trees are leaving the verdant hues of summer for the rich, vibrant reds and gold’s of autumn. Much like the seasons, change is happening to the Tower Grove East Neighborhood Association (TGENA). First, I would like to give huge and heartfelt thanks to Ann Auer as she moves into her role as Past President for all of her hard...

Grant School: The Life of a Building

One day recently I decided to take a look around a part of Tower Grove East, near the intersection of Gravois and Arsenal, that I hadn’t explored in years. When I drove past the Grant School Apartments at 3009 Pennsylvania, it struck me that I had lost track of the old school many years earlier when it was abandoned, boarded up and dilapidated. I assumed back then that it would be demolished; however, after a while, when a blue tarp appeared on the roof, it...

Roosevelt High School receives grant for academic improvement

Our neighborhood public high school, Theodore Roosevelt High School (“RHS”), continues to move forward with its turn-around efforts. The school has about 560 students this fall. While substantial efforts have been made in past years since the 2006-07 school year, and there has been a big change in atmosphere at the school, RHS is still not performing academically as hoped. This fall, the school received a three year “School Improvement Grant” (“SIG”) from the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. This is a special...

Owner Lawrence Group also provided development, design and construction management for the project. Project funding includes federal and state tax credits,...

Alderwoman Ingrassia back to work on kid friendly parks

I hope everyone enjoyed the summer and is easing into fall. The Board of Aldermen was on break for most of the summer, but we’re back in session as of September. Residents, schools and daycare centers in Fox Park were the impetus for Board Bill 185, which I introduced in September. If it passes, this ordinance would allow Aldermen, residents, the Parks Department and the police to work together to make areas designed for kids 12 and under (playgrounds, little league fields, etc.) to be...

What is Participatory Budgeting?

Participatory Budgeting (PB) is a democratic process in which community members directly decide how to spend part of a public budget. Participatory Budgeting Saint Louis (PB STL) seeks to empower residents via direct participation in the allocation of public monies in order to expand civic and political participation of citizens; and increase government transparency, with a focus on inclusion of historically disenfranchised or uninvolved populations. While PB is a fairly new concept in the United States, it is already being implemented in Chicago, New York...
