Tower Grove is a brief history of the collection neighborhoods that surround Tower Grove Park . Built out shortly after the turn-of-the-century, the Tower Grove community has been the bedrock of South St. Louis over the last one hundred years. Recognized historically as steeped in traditional St. Louis values, Tower Grove has become a haven to a very diverse cross-section of people and cultures and represents the new St. Louis . The book describes the early build-out of the neighborhood and the various architectural styles used. It discusses Henry Shaw’s vision for Tower Grove Park and the role that the park has had in the life of the community.
Tower Grove also explores the identity of the various neighborhoods in the community, their interaction with each other and highlights several important streets in order to delve into the life of the community. Finally, the book provides thumbnail portraits of important people and places in the life of the community. THE AUTHOR Mark S. Abbott, PhD is a Professor of History in the Urban Specializations Department at Harris-Stowe State University . Mark is also the Director for the Center for Neighborhood Affairs at Harris-Stowe State University and has researched extensively and written on St. Louis neighborhoods.
